The contrast in this poem between the child and the poets puts me in mind of Jesus saying “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants.” And also of Jesus’ command to receive the kingdom of God like a little child. Notice: not ‘build’, ‘grow’, ‘bring in’, or any of those active verbs, but ‘receive’. Are we willing to relinquish control and a sense of our own importance sufficiently to open ourselves to receive what God has prepared for us? Are we, this Advent, ready to receive the Word without trying to impose our own limitations and agendas?
