#adventbookclub Day 18: Watching and waiting: the Roman Empire

When we read the stories of Jesus confronting the political authorities of empire, we like to see ourselves as being like Jesus – a bit subversive, daring to speak truth to power, standing up for justice, working towards God’s kingdom. Or maybe that’s just me.

But what about the times when we’re more like the Roman Empire? Clinging to power, concerned for our reputation, failing to see God working even as God is working through us?

Who are the people then who call us to account, who challenge or confront us? Who is the Jesus to my Caesar? And am I willing to listen?

#adventbookclub runs from 1st December until Epiphany. This year we are using “The Art of Advent” by Jane Williams, and raising some money for Mercy UK, a mental health charity over at the JustGiving page here. Search #adventbookclub on Twitter or Facebook to join in the conversation.
