#adventbookclub – David: part 1

A reflection on Luke 2.8-17

“Do not be afraid”: the angel’s first words to the shepherds, and also one of the phrases most commonly spoken by or on behalf of God in the Bible. Do not be afraid. And yet. And yet it’s not that simple. And yet we can’t quite trust that much. And yet the world is so full of ‘if’s and ‘but’s and ‘maybe’s. And yet…

But the shepherds’ reaction isn’t like that. The angel’s words do seem to assuage their fears, and their first response is “Let us go now to Bethlehem”. No ‘if’s, no ‘but’s, no ‘maybe’s. They hear God’s word, and they act. May God grant us the clarity and courage to do likewise.
